We wanted to commission a piece of art that would represent the families that travelled to the UK as part of the Windrush Generation .
It was important that we gathered ideas and thoughts from the community to ensure their ideas were reflected and the decision was made to find an artist who could create a statue based piece of artwork that would look like ghosts of our dearly departed friends and families watching over us
To start the project, Wendy joined our members to construct the suitcases for our artwork
Wendy gained a BA Honours in Fine art at University of Creative Arts, Canterbury Kent and predominantly uses installation, sculpture, photography and digital media
Her artistic practice tends to ignite interaction, discussion and exploration. Wendy has facilitated community arts projects using art as a tool to encourage new forums of discussion, working with young people, delivering workshops exploring art processes, materials and art movements
We are delighted with the artwork that Wendy created and have called them “Hope” to reflect the dreams and wishes that all those people who travelled here must have had as they boarded the boats and planes to come to the UK to help rebuild the country.
Thank you Wendy for our amazing Windrush family!
