"Being entrusted by Michelle Bramble to create a design to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush was firstly an honour and also somewhat daunting.
My personal knowledge of the Windrush migration, the contributions the Windrush generation and their families have made throughout British Society during it's recovery from the Second World War was embarrassingly limited. I wanted to make sure I captured the sacrifice, bravery and passion that those first Windrush Pioneers brought to our country.
The logo tells the story of the HMT Empire Windrush journey depicted by the circles that appear in the number five, which represent the different countries the ship visited to pick up those beginning their new adventure and life to the UK.
The image of the HMT Empire Windrush shows those on board waving, symbolising leaving their loved ones behind but also celebrating their arrival at Tilbury.
Bold colours celebrate the passion and warmth of the Windrush Generation, with the words Unity and Strength recognising their resolve and spirit."
