Joseph John Jaggon was born on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. He met his wife Albertha (Pet) also from Jamaica in the UK and they were married in 1957 and have four children.
Joseph worked in the Health Service and quickly rose through the ranks medical field and local politics, while living in Tottenham. Hackney, Ilford and finally in Gravesend, when he was appointed head of South East Region of CHOSE which later became UNISON.
Joseph also was part of the health tribunal committee where he mitigated during disputes between employees and the health service. In 1982 Joseph became the first Chair of the Gravesend West Indian Association where he worked tirelessly to promote racial harmony in the community and also served as Chair of the Community Liaison Association.
Joseph was Chair of the Police Liaison Committee and was inspirational in defusing conflict between the police and young Black youths. In 1999/2000 he became the first Black Mayor of Gravesham again working tirelessly to promote harmony and reduce inequality throughout the Borough.
In 2020 a special award in recognition of his contributions to local life was awarded to his wife Alberta (also known as Pet) to thank them both for their promotion of positive community relations.
